How Long Does EB-3 Take? The Timeline From Filing to Green Card

One of the most common questions about the EB-3 program is: “How long does it take to get a US green card?”

What stages does an EB-3 case go through, and how long does it take from start to green card? In this article, Global Immigration Group explains the EB-3 processing timeline, from PERM labor certification and the petition to the visa interview and receiving your green card in the United States.

How long does an EB-3 visa take on average?

As of 2026, an EB-3 case usually takes about 2 to 4 years or longer, depending on the type of case, visa backlogs, the review pace of the US authorities and the applicant’s country of residence.

In practice, no fixed timeline applies to every EB-3 case. Some cases may finish sooner, while cases in categories with limited visas or those needing additional documents may take longer.

Waiting times also differ between EB-3 groups:

  • Skilled Workers: Processing time depends on the pace of case review and visa availability at the time.
  • Professionals: Processing time is similar to Skilled Workers because both are in the same EB-3 preference group.
  • Other Workers: The wait is usually longer because the number of visas allocated each year is limited.

Although EB-3 processing times may change from year to year, preparing a complete file from the start and tracking progress regularly helps workers stay in control of the immigration process.

Stage Reference time
PERM labor certification 12-18 months
I-140 processing 2-10 months
Waiting for the priority date Varies over time
NVC processing 2-4 months
Visa interview 1-3 months
Receiving the green card after entry 2-4 weeks

Detailed EB-3 timeline from filing to US green card

Here is a reference timeline for a typical EB-3 case.

Step 1: PERM labor certification (12-18 months)

PERM (Program Electronic Review Management) is the first step in the EB-3 visa process. At this stage, the sponsoring US business must carry out recruitment under US Department of Labor rules to show that no suitable US worker is available for the position.

After completing recruitment, the business files for PERM labor certification for the authorities to review and approve.

This is usually one of the most time-consuming stages in the entire EB-3 process.

Step 2: I-140 petition (2-10 months)

After PERM is approved, the sponsoring business files Form I-140 with US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to confirm that the worker qualifies to immigrate under EB-3.

I-140 processing time depends on the type of review chosen:

  • Regular processing: May take many months.
  • Premium Processing: Usually about 15 business days as committed by USCIS.

Step 3: Waiting for the priority date

After the I-140 is approved, the applicant may need to wait until the priority date becomes current under the Visa Bulletin. The priority date is the date the PERM application was filed and is used to determine the order for issuing immigrant visas. It is the factor with the greatest effect on total EB-3 processing time.

At some times, applicants may have to wait many additional months or longer, depending on the backlog and the number of visas allocated each year.

Step 4: Processing at the National Visa Center (2-4 months)

When the priority date becomes current, the case is transferred to the National Visa Center (NVC).

At this stage, the applicant must:

  • Pay the required fees.
  • Complete Form DS-260.
  • Submit civil documents and related supporting documents.

Processing time may vary depending on how complete the file is and on the NVC’s workload.

Step 5: Medical examination and visa interview (1-3 months)

After the NVC accepts the file, the applicant receives a schedule for the medical examination and visa interview at the US consular post. At the interview, the consular officer assesses the case and verifies the relevant information before deciding on the immigrant visa. If the case fully meets the requirements, the applicant is issued a visa to enter the United States.

Step 6: Entering the United States and receiving the green card (2-4 weeks)

After entering the United States on an immigrant visa, the worker officially becomes a lawful permanent resident.

USCIS mails the physical green card to the registered US address once the necessary procedures are complete and the USCIS Immigrant Fee has been paid.

In most cases, the green card arrives within a few weeks of entry.

EB-3 processing can take several years and depends on many factors, such as the type of case, visa availability, the review pace of the US authorities and how complete the file is. Understanding each stage helps workers plan their immigration and prepare better for the journey to the United States.
